Canteen

Our school canteen is open each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Each day, when school commences, recess and lunch orders are placed in special ‘class boxes’ in the classrooms before being taken to the canteen. Volunteers are always needed as the school canteen cannot operate without parent helpers. If you are interested in offering assistance then please contact the school. One day a week, or one day a term would be of great benefit to our students, and it’s also a great way to meet other parents and caregivers over a cup of tea during well earned ‘break times’! Hours are usually from approx. 9:00am to 2:00pm. Our canteen aims to provide students with nutritious food in accordance with the School Canteen Guidelines, as set out by the NSW Department of Education & Training. The canteen uses profit to purchase much needed additional equipment for the students of our school.

A canteen price list, and/or a canteen volunteer expression of interest form, are both available for download, or a hard copy can be obtained from the school office.

Parents and Citizens Association

The Woolgoolga Public School P&C meet in the staffroom on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. P&C meetings are open to all interested parents and citizens within our community. Family membership costs only $2.00 per year. All involvement is highly valued because a ‘strong’ P&C body is essential to ensure the success of school community cooperation and effective communication. Our school urges parents and caregivers to attend the monthly P&C meetings, not only to meet the principal and other staff and community members, but also to discuss matters of importance and have a voice in decision making. Parents may also support their child’s school by becoming actively involved in many different ways ~ as classroom helpers, canteen workers, sport coaches, transport providers etc.

School Activities

Technology

Woolgoolga Public School incorporates a wide range of technology based learning experiences. Our students have access to over 100 personal computers (both PC and iMac), all of which are networked to a number of printers throughout the school. Extensive student access to the Internet is available through our recently installed 'state of the art' optic fibre network cabling, allowing access to the internet at super-fast broadband speeds. Our computer room has 31 2.4 ghz PC's all equipped with DVD burners, 17 inch flat screen monitors, sound and internet access. Also, the room is equipped as a full digital cinema with 5.1 Dolby and DTS sound, DVD playing facilities and an LCD projector with 100 inch projected screen on which teachers can demonstrate lessons and display student work. Our network server allows for each student to have a personal login and gives them access to their own 'network space' where they can save their work and access from various locations throughout the school. The opportunity also exists to display student work in our hall with the portable 'multimedia projection centre'. This allows for students to display their computer technology projects on a screen rivalling the size of those in commercial cinemas through professional grade amplification systems.

Extensive Sports Program

Woolgoolga Public School has a strong tradition of involvement in sports. Each class participates in a fitness program and both infants and primary students attend sporting activities each week. Annual carnivals are held for swimming (Years 3 to 6), cross country (Years Kindergarten to 6) and athletics (Years Kindergarten to 6). The school sporting program aims to improve the quality, quantity and variety of sporting activities available to students and instil the belief that participation and enjoyment are more than just winning. We also participate in an annual Northern Beaches Winter Sports Carnival. This allows for children in Years 3 to 6 from the four local schools to combine for a day of fun and competition in mixed school teams participating in Oz Tag, soccer, AFL and netball.

Our school enters the State PSSA Knockout competition yearly with rugby league, girls and boys soccer, girls and boys cricket and netball being a main focus. We have a history of success in rugby league, participating in the Legends Shield, Group 2 Knockout and PSSA Knockout annually. Our team has been successful representing the North Coast in Sydney. Grades K – 6 participate in daily fitness activities and weekly sport, learning skills in various sports and the values of good sportsmanship. We participate in an intensive swimming scheme for non and weaker swimmers and water safety for K – 6 at our local Woolgoolga Swimming Pool. Throughout the year opportunities are offered to take part in extra activities such as one day surf education/awareness, gymnastics, tennis and dance programs.

Public Speaking and Debating

Through public speaking and debating programs students build self esteem, self confidence and lifelong personal skills. At Woolgoolga Public School Stage 2 and Stage 3 students participate in the annual Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Stage 3 students also have the opportunity to experience debating through the Northern Beaches Debating Program. This is a non-competitive activity aimed at building confidence and increased participation.

Music Tuition and School Band

Our school is extremely lucky in having Ms Nicola Fraser come to our school and teach music. There is a fee for her tuition. Ms Fraser can teach instruments or your child can learn to play the recorder. Instruments can be owned by students or hired through the school e.g. flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet or trombone. We have a limited supply of instruments for hire. Those students who learn instruments become part of the school band when they reach the required level of competence. Students learning the recorder become part of our school recorder ensemble. All students experience the advantage of gaining a knowledge of music that is ongoing for life if they develop a love for music. The advantage to parents is lessons are given at school and the cost involved is much lower than for children receiving private lessons. Parents do not have to transport their child to private lessons because the programme is held at school. The music programme is a fantastic, low cost way for your child to become a competent musician. If you are interested please contact Nicola direct on Ph: 6654 1408. Lessons cost $12 per week per child. Instrument hire for those who don't own their own instrument is $3 per week.

Community Language Program - Punjabi

Learning languages contributes to a student's general educational development. Australia is a multicultural and multilingual society. An appreciation and understanding for other languages and cultures improves understanding within Australia's diverse society and contributes to the development of a more harmonious society. The Community Language Program at Woolgoolga Public School has been implemented in order to reflect the strength of the Sikh community in Woolgoolga. Punjabi language education enhances cross cultural communication and positive self-concept by encouraging students of various backgrounds to learn together and with each other. The Community Language Program links to many different Key Learning Areas (KLA's) in the curriculum. More specifically in the areas of communication, socio-cultural understanding, social cohesion, self-esteem and language and cultural awareness.
